Ideally, junk foods are defined as processed foods with negligible nutrient value and are
often high in salt, sugar and fat. Junk foods are processed foods consisting of high calories,
but that is considered only as a broad umbrella. These foods are prepared in a very way that
they give the impression of being appealing and are enjoyable so you are chemically
programmed to eat more. Frequent consumption of junk food increases the intake of excess
fat, simple carbohydrates, and processed sugar which may lead to a higher risk of obesity
and cardiovascular diseases among other chronic health problems. The resulting obesity
may begin clogging up the arteries and lay the basis of an impending heart attack. It has also
been suggested that eating junk food affects the brain in the same way as consuming
addictive drugs.
Long-term effects of eating junk food
Eating a poor quality diet high in junk food is linked to a higher risk of obesity,
depression, digestive issues, heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and
early death. And as you might expect, frequency matters when it comes to the
impact of junk food on your health. The long term effect of eating junk food also
Lowered your body immunity. A typical Western diet consisting of foods high in
sugar, salt and saturated fat has a significant effect on immunity, causing increased
inflammation, increased risk of infections, higher rates of cancer and increased risk
of allergies and/or autoimmune diseases. It also Impaired cognitive function. A study
in the journal Appetite discovered a causal link between a diet high in saturated fat
and simple carbohydrates, and a reduced capacity for memory and learning. A diet
high in fast food can also increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s
disease. Moreover, Frequent junk food, reduced cardiovascular function. The Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) suggest that eating a diet high in salt often causes an
increase in blood pressure, which makes a person more likely to have a heart attack,
stroke, kidney disease, or heart disease.
Short-term effects of eating junk food
Just some days of junk food could change your metabolism. A few study of 12
healthy young men found eating junk food for just five days led to a reduced ability
of their muscles to show glucose into energy, although they didn’t eat more calories
as a part of the study. Over the long run, this alteration could lead on to insulin
resistance and eventually type 2 diabetes. Another effect of just a few days of junk
food is poor digestion. Because food lacks fiber, eating an excessive amount of it
may lead to constipation. It Increases your hunger. Studies have suggested that
eating a high-sugar food first thing in the morning can make a person feel hungrier,
as opposed to if they ate a low-sugar food. This makes sense because high-carb
foods cause a rise in insulin, which ultimately causes you to feel hungrier within a
shorter time frame. These types of foods also lack the necessary macronutrients to
make you feel satisfied. In addition, the short-term effects of eating these junk food
is Water retention. A study in the Journal of Hypertension found that consuming
high levels of salt is linked to fluid retention. Magnesium has proven to cause
significant reductions in the severity of symptoms of water retention. We also will
be Cravings for high-carb foods. Because fast foods are so highly processed, they are
rapidly broken down by the body and quickly stimulate the reward centres of the
brain. This combination makes us have cravings for these types of stimulating,
processed foods rather than fresh, quality foods.
